Each manufacturer is different. Some will work without a power cycle, some won't. It yours doesn't, just power cycle it.
I have noticed something recently though that I haven't figured out yet. With some equipment, you have to connect your modem and router first then put the shield in-line. This might have something to do with what needs to power-on first.. still testing.
