I've done everything from bridge mode with no problems. However, I remember someone saying on the old forum that router mode was preferred for the upgrade to 1.51SP1. I'm not sure why though.
As soon as 1.51SP1 is installed, it does not matter if you upgrade using router or bridge mode. Gateway was never fully developed.
However router mode is easier to debug in case of problems.

Is there a way to do this upgrade without connecting the Shield to the network? I can't seem to get it to 'show up' using an Ethernet cable connected to my laptop for some config and updates before trying to put it in production. I have tried all 3 Ethernet ports, but they all give me a 169.254.x.x address and are inaccessible. :(

Hi LTleg

can you remember the firmware version that the shield was running (RC1 or SP 1.51)

As you say your network is basic try this
switch the shield to router mode
connect your router to the shield eth0
connect the cable from computer into eth2
do a factory reset (unplug power, place pin in reset hold, whist keeping pin pressed in reconnect power also keep pressing in the pin for a further 30 seconds, then let go then leave for 10 minutes whist it starts up.

in web browser type 10.10.10.10

now do you get the log in screen with password.

I'm using Gateway mode since I bought the Shield and have never had luck with directions to get the Bridge mode to work.  I would appreciate any tips on getting this mode to work  - over and above what has already been published to the procedures. Thanks, Gary
